Daily Spam Quarantine Summary

When junk mail is sent to your email address, it will be captured in the quarantine. As a service to you, the mail filter will deliver a daily message to let you know that you have mail to review in your quarantine. For your convenience, the message contains a link you can click to manage the mail stored in your quarantine inbox.

We recommend that you click on the link that says, "To view your entire quarantine inbox or manage your preferences, click here." This way, you can easily manage all your quarantined messages at once and help make the filtering more effective by classifying mail as either spam or not spam.

For more information about the quarantine inbox, please click here.

Mail Filter Quarantine Inbox

1. Classify as Not Spam/Classify as Spam
The  Mail Filter quarantine inbox allows you to classify mail as spam or not spam. This is an important function you can perform to help make the mail filter more effective in doing its job. You can select all messages by clicking the box to the left of the "Date" header or you can select messages individually by clicking the box to the left of each one. Select any messages that you consider to be spam, and then click the "Classify as Spam" button, lettered in red, above the message list. Select any messages that you consider NOT to be spam, and click the "Classify as Not Spam" button, lettered in green.

2. Filter
If you have a lot of messages in your inbox, and you are looking for something specific, you can use the filter feature to find it. You can find a message by who the message is from, what the subject line contains or by typing in something you believe to be in the message content in the "Pattern" box. Simply make the appropriate choice from the pull-down list. Click "Apply Filter" after making your choice.

3. Deliver
Select any message you wish to have delivered to your mail program (Outlook, etc.) by clicking the box next to that message. Click the "Deliver" button to complete the process. This will remove the message from your quarantine inbox and deliver it to you immediately.

4. Whitelist
If any messages in the quarantine inbox are from a sender whose mail you NEVER want to be filtered again, you may whitelist that sender by clicking the box next to that message and clicking the "Whitelist" button. That will ensure that the sender's future mail will not be filtered, and it will deliver that message to your regular mail program.

5. Delete
To delete messages, select all the messages by clicking the boxes next to them and then click the "Delete" button. Those messages will be deleted from the quarantine inbox and they are irretrievable.

6. Deliver | Whitelist | Delete
Next to each message, under "Actions," is an alternate way to individually deliver, whitelist or delete that message. Click the appropriate action.

Preferences

The "Preferences" tab will take you to an area where you can change your password, enable/disable your quarantine, enable/disable spam filtering, create and manage your whitelist/blacklist and change the frequency of your quarantine notification.

--return to questions

a. Preferences - Security (change your password)

When you receive your welcome message, you will notice that a random password has been assigned. You may wish to change your password. You may do so by clicking the "Security" tab under "Preferences" after logging in. Please, for your own security, do not use a password that is easy to guess, such as a word in the dictionary or a family member or pet name.

You will have to type in the old password and then the new password twice. Then click "Save Password."

b. Preferences - Quarantine Enable/Disable

If you want to have mail scanned, but not detained in the quarantine inbox, you can click the "No" radio button and then click "Save Changes." You may like to do this if you want to have all mail delivered to you, but want to filter the marked messages to a special folder in your mail client. The subject line of any mail that normally would have been kept in the quarantine inbox will be preceded by [QURA].

c. Preferences - Spam Filter Enable/Disable

If you do not want to have any of your email scanned for spam, click "No" and then "Save Changes." Viruses will still be stopped.

d. Preferences - Whitelist/Blacklist

Any email addresses or domains that you wish to always be allowed may be added to your whitelist. They will not be quarantined, no matter what the content. Simply type (or copy & paste) the email address or domain into the box found below "Allowed Email Addresses and Domains," and click the "Add" button. Be careful allowing an entire domain, especially if it's a common one, such as aol.com, yahoo.com or hotmail.com.

e. Preferences - Quarantine Notification

You have the option of changing the frequency of the notification interval, or how often you will receive a notice from the ConnectNC Mail Filter telling you that you have messages in your quarantine inbox. We do not recommend changing this value, however, unless you check your quarantine inbox on your own on a regular basis. This will prevent you from missing important email that may be quarantined (possible false positives). If you do decide to change the frequency, make your choice and click the "Save Changes" button.

How do I get to the Mail Filter?
The mail filter is located at http://mailfilter.connectnc.com:8000/cgi-bin/index.cgi  Don't forget to click "Log Off" when you're finished to prevent others from changing your configuration!

--return to questions

Mailing Lists
If you have mailing lists set up, and are using the mail filter, it will be necessary for you to disable scanning for each mailing list before you add subscribers to that list!

--return to questions

Catch-all Aliases
Catch-all aliases are not recommended for use with mail filtering, since hundreds (possibly thousands) of quarantine inboxes can be created. To avoid being charged for filtering for hundreds of quarantine inboxes, we strongly suggest that your catch-all alias be deleted before you begin filtering service. If you choose to use a catch-all alias, you will be billed for the maximum number of quarantine inboxes created during the month. You will receive a report of those addresses.

New E-mail Addresses
When you add a new e-mail address to your domain, please send a message to Customer Care so that it can be added to the mail filter
